WWE
WrestleMania 42 saw Cody Rhodes retain the WWE Championship against Randy Orton, only to receive head and eye injuries during the main event.
In the wake of the injury, Rhodes was tended to by medical personnel at Allegiant Stadium, with his eye swollen shut.
Rhodes has continued to compete, with his most recent match being a victory over Sami Zayn on the May 22 SmackDown episode, leading a post-match attack from GUNTHER ahead of WWE Clash in Italy.
Set to defend the WWE Championship against GUNTHER on May 31, Rhodes was asked how he’s feeling during a recent appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, saying:
“Well, I’m here. I’m here, and I’m holding the WWE Championship; that’s the most important thing.
“And all that concussion protocol and this thing was completely swollen shut, staples to the back of the head, stitches to the front of the head, I still found a way to wrestle the following week, so (I’m) built a little different.
“Yeah, I’m feeling real braggadocios about it. Gave me his best shot, and I came and wrestled the next week.”

Rhodes would also discuss whether he feels that GUNTHER has the home turf advantage at Clash in Italy, noting that Europe isn’t a “monolith”.
Cody Rhodes Really Is Built Different
Returning to WWE in 2022 and appearing at WrestleMania 38, Cody Rhodes would suffer a torn pectoral muscle that would throw his match against Seth Rollins at Hell in a Cell into doubt.
The doubts were unfounded, with Rhodes defeating Rollins at the June 2022 PLE, very clearly still suffering from the muscle tear, yet competing for nearly twenty-five minutes.
Rhodes would admit to being initially embarrassed by the injury, later undergoing surgery to repair the damage and being out of action until his in-ring return in the men’s Royal Rumble match in January 2023.
For many, and for good reason, a pec tear is likely to see them take time out pretty much straight away. For Rhodes, it was a demonstration of personal fortitude that seemingly kept him active.
It’s no surprise then that Rhodes has been willing to compete following WrestleMania 42, instead of opting to just take a promo-driven role. Not to say that he hasn’t had plenty of microphone time, but May has seen victories over Ricky Saints and the aforementioned Sami Zayn.
While Rhodes may be built different, the same can be said of GUNTHER, a WWE star who has made a career of his no-nonsense attitude, something that will be in full effect at Clash in Italy.
